What do psychologists do?

  • Psychologists work with individuals, groups and families to help people change the way they think, behave, feel and react.
  • Psychologists have specific training in the brain, memory and learning processes, and human behaviour.
  • Psychologists have completed a minimum of 6 years education, training and supervised experience in order to be registered to practice. Ongoing professional development is continually required to keep up to date with skills and evidence based treatment.
  • Treatment is tailored to the individual and the psychologist will provide assessment, develop strategies and deliver evidence based treatments.

Treatment is always incorporating principles of Trauma Informed Care, which means that safety, trust, choice, collaboration, empowerment and respect for diversity is key. Treatment primarily incorporates ‘bottom up’ processing which includes sensory and other ways to calm the nervous system, then ‘top down processing’ which includes a cognitive approach to understanding behaviour change.
